How we teach at Impact Tuition?

Who teaches?

Only fully qualified and experienced teachers deliver lessons at our centre. Lead teacher and centre owner, Kelly Barrett, has been teaching since 1995 but left classroom teaching in 2011 to start Impact Tuition because she wanted to spend more time with her children and get a dog! Kelly is now an accredited Specialist Dyslexia & Dyscalculia Teacher (ATS/ATD) and is studying to become a diagnostic assessor. Her real passion is working with children who may struggle at school due to SEN.

Rosie is an Early Years & Key Stage 1 specialist as well as a Specialist Dyslexia Teacher (ATS). She is very experienced in supporting pupils who are in the early stages of learning to read, write and work with numbers.

Gary is a very experienced Key Stage 2 teacher and works with pupils in Years 5 and 6 who are preparing for 11+ and SATs.

Youssef is our Maths GCSE teacher. He is a subject specialist with over 25 years’ experience. He has a great track record of working with a wide range of students, from those aiming for a Grade 9, to those who are very anxious about maths.

Leor, James and Catherine all teach English at GCSE. They are all very experienced subject specialists and Leor is a Specialist Dyslexia Teacher.

Katie is a primary specialist. For the last 18 months, her role in school has been focused on helping pupils who have fallen behind due to breaks in their education due to COVID. She is a very skilled teacher and is great at building confidence in pupils who have gaps in their learning. She also specialises in supporting students with ADHD and/or ASD.

What are lessons like at Impact Tuition Urmston?

We teach in small groups with no more than 4 pupils per teacher, many groups have only 3 children, ensuring lots of attention is available for each child. Each session lasts for 1 hour and twenty minutes and is broken down into different learning activities.

Every child receives a combination of one-to-one teaching time, computer activities, and paper-based activities. As the pupil: teacher ratio is much smaller than in the average classroom, children get more teacher attention and feel more confident to ask questions than they may do in the classroom environment. They are also able to develop their independent working skills and gain motivation from the small group they are working with.

We aim to teach each child in a way that suits them as much as possible; some children learn by doing and may benefit from educational games, some love technology and we use lots of multi-sensory resources to make our lesson engaging and motivating. Many children need more repetition of key concepts than they get at school and teaching in different ways enables consolidation without getting bored!

Our teachers are all parents themselves, with school-age children, and understand what it is like to be a busy working parent with children at school. We aim to also help you support your child at home so that they get the most out of tuition.

All children love praise and rewards, we ensure that the children work in a positive learning environment where their work is valued and they are given lots of praise for hard work, progress and achievement. Many of our parents comment on how much their child’s confidence has improved since they started coming for tuition. We aim to have a positive, nurturing environment, with high expectations of all children.
